Frequently asked questions
Answers about Amoeba, taken from our documentation.
What is Amoeba?
Amoeba is a multiplayer IDE for software teams and the AI coding agents they run. The product is in early access and free while we work with pilot teams.
Which coding agents does Amoeba work with?
Amoeba works with Claude Code and Codex. Every member connects their own CLI under their own login and subscription, and different people can run different providers in the same session. Onboarding detects the CLIs on your machine and sets up the hooks and coordination tools in one click.
Do I need a coding agent installed?
No. Without an agent you can still watch every session live, comment, and hold work from the board.
Where does my source code live?
Your repository stays in local checkouts. Code moves over plain Git under your own credentials, through shadow refs on your configured remote. Amoeba coordinates metadata such as sessions, plans, presence and memory, and stores snapshot commit and ref metadata, not a copy of your repository. Your agent runs on your machine under your provider login. Anthropic can also process prompt-derived content for overlap checks and task summaries.
What happens when two agents work on the same files?
Before a prompt runs, Amoeba compares the current branch, open file paths, planned file paths and task descriptions with active sessions. Same-file activity is marked as overlapping, and related plans or task descriptions can be marked as adjacent. The warning names the teammate and session, so the team can join, split or coordinate the work. Exact-path locks are advisory and scoped to the session. If the local hook or the Brain is unavailable, the prompt continues, so confirm ownership directly when a warning is missing.
What can each role do?
There are four roles. Viewers see sessions, transcripts, diffs, plans, memories and history. Commenters can also comment, make suggestions and hold work. Editors can also start and join sessions, prompt, take over, spawn subagents, answer approvals and manage plans. Owners can also manage membership, roles, settings and deletion. Roles are granted per workspace, and role changes take effect on the server immediately.
What does Amoeba cost?
The app is free during early access. Bring your own agent: your provider’s charges go to your provider and Amoeba adds no markup to them. Optional Amoeba-managed model usage is metered and billed at provider token cost plus 5%, and it needs your payment consent and an allowance choice first.
How do the model prices work?
The models page lists each model with its price per 1M tokens in USD. Selected models are 20% off and the rest are at list price. The prices shown already include the discount.
Which platforms are supported?
Amoeba runs on macOS with Apple silicon (an M1 or newer) and on Windows x64. Both installers are signed, and the Mac build is notarized by Apple. The app updates itself, except builds at 0.1.17 or older, which need one manual install of the latest build.
How do I get started?
Download Amoeba, sign in with email, Google or GitHub, and open the local Git clone you want to use. Amoeba stores GitHub access tokens, encrypted, to give you repository access; it does not store your local Git credentials or SSH keys. Create an organization for your team or join the one a teammate made, then invite teammates by GitHub username and pick their role. From Mission Control, start a session with a short task description.
What happens if an agent hits a usage limit or the connection drops?
When an agent hits a usage limit, the session switches to awaiting takeover and a teammate can pick it up with full context. The age of the last synced snapshot is shown before they confirm. If the coordination server is unreachable, your agent keeps working on its own and reconnects automatically.
